Abstract
Refuse Collection Stations (RCS) built since 1990 by the Guangzhou government close to residential areas to compress garbage generated bad odours causing complaints by residents. A preliminary trial incorporating a EM treatment at the oldest refuse dumping site at Likeng demonstrated the disappearance of bad odours in 21 days after application. Following this initial success, a study was conducted at two RCSs located at Huangsha and Dongfengxi where 10 l and 6 1 of EM solution respectively were sprayed thrice a day at the two sites. After 3 weeks NH3 reduced by 32.5% - 62.5% and H2S decreased by 32% - 33.3% at the two stations. Three months later all 110 RCSs used EM deodoration. Much fewer flies are now observed, bad ordours have disappeared and there is evidence to show that the sewage too has cleaned up by the EM running down into the drainage system.
