Abstract
Agriculture in Austria is facing grave problems due to reduced prices of
produce. Thus farmers need low cost technologies to reduce costs of production,
in order to derive profits from their enterprises. Thus, Austria initiated
a program on EM in 1997, including composting, sludge management, spraying
onto corn straw, in animal production and treatment of both on farm and
household wastes. The results are very promising and the benefits of EM
from all these projects developed with time. The longer the use of EM and
bokashi, the better were the results. This success led to the development
of EM related programs in the Czech Republic as well. The potential of
EM in Austria and its neighbouring countries are good and the program currently
being undertaken is presented.
