Abstract
Swine production plays a prominent role in the agriculture of China. However,
the swine industry has many problems, among which environmental pollution
plays an important role. Thus EM was used to overcome this problem in a
pilot study at the China Agricultural University. Application of EM reduced
indices such as BOD, COD, ammonia contents and hydrogen sulphide to levels
that were 50% below the national standard. This reduced the requirement
of chemicals. The use of EM increased feed utilization rates and daily
weight gains in swine, resulting in enhanced profits due to greater production
of better quality meat. Tests by the Ministry of Agriculture proved that
this technology was environmentally friendly, which could be used for cleaner
production units of swine that could generate higher yields and profits
in China.
